Friends
I believe Mary and Martha were true friends of Jesus, women who welcomed him not only as Rabbi, but as beloved companion. I wanted to depict the warmth of anticipation filling them as they awaited his arrival. Light spills through the doorway as though joy itself has entered the house. After watching Jesus call Lazarus from the grave, I imagine these sisters carrying within themselves an early understanding of resurrection hope. They knew what it meant to watch death defeated in the presence of Christ. This painting is also a tribute to the deep friendships formed among women who know this resurrection hope. Thank you to my seminary sisters Katherine and Taylor for teaching me the beauty of sisterhood found in Christ.
