The Samaritan woman became the first evangelist, and the person with the longest recorded conversation with Jesus in the Gospels. I feel deep and tender compassion for this woman. I wonder what suffering shaped her prior to this encounter. Was she widowed, perhaps multiple times? Jesus did not condemn her, but gave her dignity as one worthy of theological conversation. Dropping her water jar like a discarded fish net, she runs to tell everyone in town who is at the well. And through her witness many in the town believed and followed Jesus because of her testimony.
